Challenge.
Explore nature’s bio-mimicry approach to resolving real world problems. Street crime is a rising trend that affect the lives of thousands people.
Opportunity.
Design a self-defense wearable that is functional, unobtrusive and is based on the Bombardier Beetle.
Research.
Results suggests that by applying the Bombardier Beetle’s function combined with the right materials, a more effective chemical spray self-defense weapon is made with its faster deployment and easier reach compared to traditional pepper sprays.
Sketch Development.
The Bombardier Beetle has an incredible self-defense mechanism. It can perfectly command its internal organs to contain and release chemical jet. This chemical jet defends and neutralizes predators. After carefully studying what happens during those seconds I was able to ideate on replicating the organic mechanism of the Beetle. Then added that technology to a watch, thus making a self-defense product. One major innovation from the first concept is the orientation of the spray direction. Now its virtually impossible to aim it towards your body. The user’s skin is protected by the watch bands.
Prototyping.
Ergonomic testing was essential in order to provide a product that is both comfortable and is visually appealing to the user. The watch is secured with two screws that are fastened to the bottom casing. There is a top plate that can be manually slid to the opposite side. When it is slid, it activates (4) springs that in a matter of milliseconds it creates a force that pushes a button/platform upward through an opening. The button is connected to the platform. This force is strong enough to rupture the conceptual silicone bladder. Once used the watch will have to be “reloaded” with a new fresh bladder pack however this is easily done with the removal of just two screws and swapping the bladder packs.
Final CMF & Assembly.
Scenario.
A young lady gets off from work later than expected. She knows that at that time the streets get a bit dangerous, so she puts on her Bombardier Watch. While walking to the bus, she feels that she is being followed. Soon after, the robber tries to intercept her, but thanks to the Bombardier Watch’s quick and fast deployment, she is able to cripple her attacker and run towards safety.
