Hygea Mosquito Trap
inspired by nature’s insect trapper
Challenge.
Mosquito traps on the market are electricity dependent, and use harsh chemicals.
Opportunity.
Make summer enjoyable for everyone, by designing a mosquito trap, that balances the integration of lifestyle choices and biological systems.
Background.
Due to the rising sea levels, water will inevitably become a key collaborator to the growth of diseases. Freshwater is the home of mosquitoes, the deadliest virus spreading insect. There are 500 million documented cases of mosquito-borne illnesses that occur year after year.
Motivation.
Collected form attributes from nature, and efficiency from industrialized products. The aimed lifestyle is meant to fit for Claudio, 25. Claudio is a pro-green activist, who loves the outdoors, and enjoys camping on the weekends. He is tired of using traditional repellents, and is looking for a solution that is natural and reduces carbon footprint. Claudio enjoys subtle, but effective design.
Ideation Phase.
The initial process included ways of making the trap more functional. The final concept uses a soft form, that matches the organic look that was intended.
Final Concept.
Development & Validation Model.
I began by experimenting with FDM prototypes. Then, I moved to SLA because using a clear resin was optimal to see the effectiveness of the trap. The trap is powered by a non-toxic mix. The solution only contains pre-measured amounts of sucrose and yeast. This attractant activates after coming into contact with water. The insects drown, and it also smells like fresh pizza dough.
Creating the ideal user experience.
After finalizing the form, many situations, and possible outcomes have been created that gave a clear vision of how the user would interact with the product.
1. Open Hygea, and remove starting mix.
4. Lights will attract mosquitoes from a long range.
2. Place contents into Hygea. Mix with water.
5. CO2 will lure them in. Once inside, mosquitoes can’t escape due that they tend to follow light sources.
3. Place into desired location.
6. Enjoy your time! Mosquito free.

Pollution Awareness: Main bodies are made of Post Consumer Recycled Resin (PRC), while keeping in mind plastic pollution and product’s life cycle.
